Born in Trollhattan, on the west coast of Sweden, Benjamin Bjorklund has a diverse background as a prison night guard, a psychiatric nurse, and a veterinary student. As a painter he draws upon past experiences and current influences to create in oil and watercolour. He currently divides his time between his studio in Uppsala, Sweden, and London, UK. Spending the majority of his time in Sweden, Ben enjoys a simple life in a modest 19th century farm house with his muse, his Great Dane Solomon, and a menagerie of mammals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and rats.
Finding inspiration in everyday life, Ben regularly seeks to interpret through his paintings the emotions and characters of the beings that surround him. He keeps his compositions and focal points simplistic, ensuring his subjects remain within reach. He uses a combination of photos, memories, and live study to paint pictures that predominately feature his animal and human families. Ben's figurative work often depicts scenes bordering on the surreal, existing in various physical and emotional situations. He emphasizes this quality of his painted spaces with abstracted light and darts of colour. Ben refers to these as happy "happy mistakes", spontaneous action that focus the viewer's attention and emotional engagement.
Having sold work around the world Ben's painting are held in private collections in a number of cities including London, NY, LA, San Fransisco, Melbourne and across Sweden and Europe.
